Whirlpool Politics:
Water as a Global Challenge.

April 2010.

From April 11th till April 17th 2010 the Institute of Political Science at Leiden University, Netherlands will host an international conference in the field of political science. The theme for this year will be Whirlpool Politics: Water as a Global Challenge. This conference will be hosted under the umbrella of the International Association for Political Science Students (IAPSS) which consists of over 50 study associations of political science departments across the globe. At the AC-GA (Academic Conference and General Assembly), the cities of Leiden and The Hague will host more than 150 political science students from all over the world.

Sign of a Worldwide Problem

The conflicts that arise from disputes over water, are becoming more frequent. Recently published news stories illustrate the importance of this problem. Less than a month ago the Dutch Broadcast Foundation (NOS) reported about conflicts concerning water in the Middle-East. Take a look at the following news item, to become aware of the urgency of this problem.

Averting a perfect storm of shortages
As the world's population grows, competition for food, water and energy will increase. Food prices will rise, more people will go hungry, and migrants will flee the worst-affected regions. (Source: BBC News, August, 24th 2009)

Not only is the news reporting more frequently and more urgently about water related problems, different kind of institutions feel this need as well. Check the following websites to see what is being said about this topic.

The scale and influence of the water issue may be apparent. In the Annual Conference we will try to formulate solutions for the discussed problems concerning water. Together we can formulate solutions to existing problems. Since IAPSS offers us a unique platform for inter-cultural dialogue and exchange of knowledge, our formulated solutions will be based on knowledge and experience from all over the world. Join the conference in April and play an active role in the process of sharing knowledge and formulating solutions.
